Dems Recruiting Marine Veteran For KY Senate Seat

If there is one thing that drives grassroots Democrats wild with excitement, other than Trump’s possible impeachment or defeat, it is the prospect of defeating Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in 2020. This issue is so hot in Twitter circles that it has spawned the popular #DitchMitch hashtag among many others

Well it turns out according to a Politico piece, that there is indeed a major plan spearheaded by Senator Chuck Schumer(D-NY) to have Marine veteran and Fighter Pilot Amy McGrath go after Mitch McConnell’s senate seat in 2020. Sen Schumer has apparently been talking to McGrath about the possible senate run since December 2018 and according to the Politico piece, top Democratic Party officials attended their latest meeting last month. This suggests that there is a major party push (not just Sen Schumer) to have McGrath run for the KY senate seat

By all accounts Amy McGrath appears to be a solid candidate. She apparently lost a congressional race in 2018 to GOP’s Andy Barr in a very red district. Dem strategists however think she may fare better statewide against Mitch McConnell given McConnell’s low approval ratings.

According to the Politico piece, McGrath remains undecided about running but given the major push by the Democratic party establishment, smart money is she will end up running. A popular Kentucky sports radio host Matt Jones has also expressed an interest in vying for McConnell’s Senate seat as a Democrat. It will be interesting to see who Democrats ultimately pick to go up against Mitch McConnell.

Bottom line Kentucky is a reliably Republican state and it is fair to say it will be an uphill battle for any Democrat going up against veteran GOP Senator Mitch McConnell. But if there is any lesson Democrats have learnt out of the recently concluded 2018 elections, it is that fighting makes all the difference. By choosing to fight tooth and nail Democrats almost flipped Ted Cruz’s senate seat, something political pundits had previously thought impossible. Therefore going into 2020 whether Dems settle on McGrath or Jones, they must likewise fight tooth and nail for McConnell’s seat. There’s good reason to believe that there are many Independent Kentuckians fed up with McConnell/GOP just like they were in Texas with Cruz. Simply put, with a proper fight, Dems have a good chance of flipping Mitch McConnell’s senate seat in 2020

Investigate Mitch McConnell Over TrumpRussia

A bombshell New York Times piece says after Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey, officials at the FBI were very concerned about the President’s actions that they launched a conterintelligence investigation into whether the President himself was secretly working for Russia. Naturally this has taken the already red-hot #TrumpRussia debate to a whole new level. Nobody in their wildest dreams ever envisioned a scenario where a sitting President of the United States would ever be under investigation for being an agent of a hostile foreign power, especially our gravest threat Russia.

Remember just a few years ago (2012), the Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney listed Russia as America’s deadliest foe, a position totally embraced by his Republican party. The Russian threat is therefore not just a liberal fantasy as some on the right have attempted to downplay it. It is a real threat recognized by Democrats, Republicans and indeed the entirety of the U.S. intelligence community.

Somehow after Trump became President in 2016, the GOP that once considered Russia our greatest foe has all of a sudden become quite amenable to the state, even going as far as making excuses for their obvious attempts to interfere in the 2016 U.S. elections. Much of the outrage for the GOP’s shocking change in posture towards Russia has been focused on President Trump, and rightfully so. Lost in the TrumpRussia debate however is the role Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has played in the scandal right from its inception.

There were media reports in 2016 right before the Presidential elections that when the Obama administration approached Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about Russia’s efforts to interfere in U.S. elections, he literally threatened then president Obama not to make that information public. Senator McConnell’s TrumpRussia questions do not begin and end with the Obama incident. He has since then done some other things that further raise questions about his motivations regarding Russia chief among them, blocking efforts to pass legislation shielding Special Counsel Mueller from a potential firing by President Trump.

Bottom line, Democrats need to develop a zero tolerance approach towards TrumpRussia apologists beginning with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. A lot of focus is placed on Trump leaving a lot of very questionable Republican members of congress flying under the radar while openly aiding and abetting the actions of Putin’s Russia. Simply put, our guiding philosophy henceforth should be that Putin has Russian assets in Washington and it is not just President Trump. A lot of Republican members of congress perfectly fit the Russian asset bill and should be investigated. Number one on the list of congressional Republicans who should be investigated over the Russian attack is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. There are valid questions here as to allegiance.

Pelosi Tutors Mitch McConnell On The Constitution

In case you missed it newly minted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently attended a town hall hosted by MSNBC’s Joy Reid and slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for essentially abdicating his constitutional duty as a congressional leader.

Speaker Pelosi told Joy Reid;“What Mitch McConnell is doing, and I say this as respectfully as possible, is we are not needed. Congress might as well stay home. All we need is one person to show up–Donald Trump, and that’s not what our founders had in mind. The President can sign or not but he[McConnell] should never say I’m not even going to put it on the President’s desk….don’t say Congress is irrelevant.”

Speaker Pelosi’s remarks come against a backdrop of the partial government shutdown (aka #TrumpShutdown) over funding for the border wall. Immediately after being sworn into the 116th Congress, House Democrats passed bills aimed at reopening the government. The bills require a vote in the Senate before they head to the white house for the President’s signature. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to table the bills in the Senate arguing that because Trump would never sign them into law, there was no need for him to table them–a waste of time. This has sparked a constitutional debate as to what the role of congress, and specifically Mitch McConnell’s is vis-a-vis the President.

Speaker Pelosi’s argument which is the long-held view among many constitutional scholars is that because Congress is one of the three co-equal branches of government (alongside the Judiciary and the Executive), the President should not dictate the affairs of Congress. In other words, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell should not refuse to table a bill to reopen the government(or any bill for that matter) simply because he thinks or knows that the President would not sign it. When the House passes a bill, his job is to table it in the Senate for a vote and if it passes, let the President do whatever he wants with it(sign it or not). As Speaker Pelosi correctly argues, this is how the founding fathers intended for Congress to operate—an independent, co-equal branch of government.

The argument Speaker Pelosi is making doesn’t get the mainstream media attention it deserves but touches on a very important constitutional topic. For the last two years with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and former House Speaker Paul Ryan, we have arguably witnessed the most egregious constitutional aberration in terms of what the proper role of Congress is vis-a-vis the President. This idea that a Senate Majority Leader and House Speaker are just subservient surrogates of the President as we have witnessed from Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan for the last two years is as un-American as it gets. The U.S. founding fathers never meant for Congress to be subservient to the President.

You don’t have to take Speaker Pelosi’s word for it. A venerable journalist with the Washington Post, Jennifer Rubin wrote a forceful opinion piece about the same subject and later expounded on it on MSNBC’s AM Joy Show.

Bottom line one only hopes that Speaker Pelosi, congressional Democrats and indeed the mainstream media (kudos to WaPo’s Jennifer Rubin), will continue hammering away at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for the constitutional aberration he and former House Speaker Paul Ryan have perpetrated for the last two years. The message to Sen McConnell should be very clear:”If you don’t have a clear grasp of your constitutional duties as a congressional leader, you should step down.” Simply put, Speaker Pelosi must keep calling out Sen McConnell’s constitutional aberration and continue giving him free constitutional tutorials until he gets it.

What Does Michael Cohen Know About McConnell, Ryan Russia Ties?

House Speaker Paul Ryan(R-WI) with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell(R-KY)

As details of the Southern District of New York(SDNY) case against former Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen continue to go public, there is growing intrigue about what he has shared with federal prosecutors about Trump’s finances, especially as they relate to Russia. As Trump’s right hand man for many years, Cohen is in a position to know details of Trump’s financial entanglements worldwide. and the mainstream media’s focus on what Cohen knows about Trump’s business ties is totally justified.

What the mainstream media and quite frankly congressional Democrats must not miss however is that Cohen was also the Republican National Committee’s(RNC) Deputy Finance Chair.  This means Cohen is also in a position to know details of possible ties between key congressional Republicans and the Russians, chief among them House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Over the last two years, there have been a lot of questions raised about the strange reluctance by Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell to confront Trump about his 2016 campaign ties to Russia. The strange silence of Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell has naturally spurred a lot of conspiracy theories suggesting that the two congressional leaders are silent because they are compromised by Russia. Well Cohen could lay to rest all these conspiracy theories regarding these two congressional leaders or any other Republican member of Congress for that matter.

Cohen is scheduled to begin his 3 year jail sentence in March 2019 and there is word that congressional Democrats plan on having him testify in Congress before then. If and when that happens, Congressional Democrats must inquire from Cohen about GOP’s financial ties to Russia with special emphasis on Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell.

Bottom line reasonable people will agree that Russia’s infiltration into U.S. affairs goes way beyond Trump and his family. Where, as here, opportunities arise for the public to learn more about the said Russian infiltration, both the mainstream media and congressional Democrats must adopt the big picture approach as opposed to focusing only on Trump and his family. The public is also eager to learn details about GOP’s financial ties to Russia and Cohen appears to be the perfect vehicle for that.

Mitch McConnell Confirms GOP Plans To Cut Medicare, Medicaid & Social Security

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell all but confirmed what most Democrats including Yours Truly have always suspected, that the GOP’s ultimate plan is to gut the three key entitlement programs Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security using the argument that they are the biggest contributors to the national debt.

Asked by a Bloomberg host what the GOP plans to do about the record $779 Billion deficit, Sen McConnell responded, “Its very disturbing and its driven by the three biggest entitlement programs that are very popular, Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. That’s 70% of what we spend every year…there’s been a bipartisan reluctance to tackle entitlement changes because of the popularity of those programs. Hopefully at some point here we will get serious about it, we haven’t been yet.” Translation? If the GOP wins both the House and Senate this November, expect drastic cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

While it is a fact that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are indeed the biggest contributors to the national debt, what Republicans conveniently leave out of the debate is that this was true even before they passed their massive tax cuts that favor the rich. As a matter of fact prior to the GOP passing the massive tax bill, the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office(CBO) warned that the tax bill would severely worsen the national debt problem. So Republicans knew their tax cuts for the rich would balloon the already high national debt, rammed them through anyway, and are now trying to shift the blame to the working poor by arguing for cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.

Several mainstream media outlets confronted key GOP members of congress about the wisdom of pushing through the massive tax cuts knowing full well that it would worsen the national debt problem. The answer given by House Speaker Paul Ryan, a well known deficit hawk was that there was nothing to worry about because the tax cuts would spur massive economic growth which would take care of the deficit problem

It appears now given Sen Mitch McConnell’s recent comments to Bloomberg that Speaker Ryan was lying all along. The GOP knew full well the tax cuts would create a massive national debt which they would then use as an excuse to gut the three key entitlement programs–Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security–a lifelong goal for GOP Super Donors Koch Brothers.

Bottom line it is not a surprise that the GOP is now going after Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. The important thing is that there is a surefire way of stopping the corrupt GOP dead in their tracks--voting in midterms 2018. Simply put, Democrats must campaign heavily using the argument that the GOP wants to gut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, programs that have predominantly helped the poor in order to sustain their reckless tax cuts for the rich. Now that is a winning campaign message for Dems both for the House and U.S. Senate.

GOP Senators Stalling On The Secure Elections Act

Yahoo News today reported that at the request of the White House(read Trump), GOP members of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee that overseas federal elections today stalled a bill–Secure Elections Act–that enjoys bipartisan support and would have significantly shored up election system defenses against the threat of Russian hacking in the  midterms and beyond. Listed below are the shameful GOP Senators in the Rules Committee who don’t want to secure our voting machines. Notice the list includes two of the most despised U.S. Senators–Ted Cruz and Mitch McConnell–truly deplorable!!

There is no valid explanation as to why any member of Congress would be opposed to a bill that seeks to protect our election systems from the threat of Russian hacking. It is very clear as Yours Truly has repeatedly stated that the GOP is banking on Russian hacking in the 2018 midterms.

The reason given by Trump’s White House, that this bill is redundant because DHS is already capable of performing what the bill proposes is also unavailing. Just the other day MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow had a segment where a cyber security expert blamed DHS for leaving local county election officials to defend themselves against Russian hacking. If DHS is already capable of defending our election systems why are they letting the counties do it on their own?

Bottom line Dems and the mainstream media need to keep their eyes on Trump’s GOP as regards Russian interference. Folks if they know we are watching their every move, maybe just maybe they may get deterred. Under no circumstances however should Dems trust assurances from Kirstjen Nielsen’s DHS or the Trump White House regarding their efforts to secure our vote.
