Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo on MSNBC’s Last Word w/Lawrence O’Donnell(05/24/22)

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo appeared on MSNBC’s Last Word w/Lawrence O’Donnell show(05/24/22) to push for gun reform in Texas, following the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead.

Judge Hidalgo(video at 4:11): “The Houston Chronicle just published an oped and they ask in this context of law and order frenzy that’s taking over the country: What kind of a law and order state does so little to prevent the massacre of 18 babies in their own school? That’s what we need to call out. You cannot have a discussion about public safety without discussing the role of guns, of these weapons of mass destruction…”

This is a point that cannot be reiterated enough. Republicans in Texas and elsewhere, cannot have it both ways. They cannot go around screaming about “rising violent crime under Biden/Democrats” while at the same time seemingly totally oblivious to their/NRA’s huge role in the proliferation of such guns. As Judge Hidalgo stated, citing a report from the Harris County Medical Examiner, there’s a direct correlation between rising crime and the lax GOP gun laws(video at 2:05): “Our Medical Examiner just released data that the percentage of homicides related to guns has only increased in Texas and here in Harris County since the state has relaxed gun safety laws more and more.”

There’s no other way to interpret this other than Governor Abbott and his Texas Republicans have made the state a dangerous place because of their lax gun laws meant to placate the NRA.

Bottom line folks, Republicans, and especially Texas Republicans, should not be allowed to continue with their faux outrage over “rising crime under Democrats.” Democrats need to do a better job in reminding voters as we approach the 2022 midterms, that lax gun laws passed by Republicans, have a lot to do with the rising crime, especially homicides.

Pressure Mounting On GOP Senator Mike Lee To Come Clean Over His Role In Overturning 2020 Election

$upport via Cash App

Interesting segment on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow show(04/19/22) looked into the intense pressure building on Senator Mike Lee(R-UT) from his hometown newspapers, for him to come clean over his involvement with efforts to assist former President Trump to overturn the 2020 elections, and specifically, his role in the fake electors scheme. As Maddow correctly pointed out, public statements attributed to Sen Lee regarding Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 elections are in stark contrast with his newly released private text messages, which clearly show his deep involvement with the fake electors scheme.

It appears Sen Lee’s hometown newspapers have seized on this glaring discrepancy between public “constitutional conservative” Mike Lee, and private insurrectionist Mike Lee, and are demanding that the Senator finally come clean about his involvement with Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 elections. The newspapers have zeroed in on the Utah State Republican Convention scheduled for Saturday(04/23/22, for Sen Lee to finally come clean about this issue.

Maddow referenced an editorial from a leading Utah newspaper(video at 4:15): “Just today, the Salt Lake Tribune has released a new editorial under this headline, Saturday’s Utah State Republican Convention would be a great place for Mike Lee to come clean…It’s past time for Mike Lee to start fessing up to all he knows about the plot to set aside the results of an honest and fair election in order to keep Donald Trump in power. We know Utah’s Senior Senator had a much greater role in that plot than he has previously acknowledged. His constituents deserve a much more detailed accounting of what went on and the extent of Senator Lee’s participation in it. Yesterday would be a great time for Senator Lee to come clean. Saturday’s State Republican Convention would be a really good opportunity for that too.”

Bottom line folks, it is very encouraging to see the media in Utah pressuring Senator Lee to come clean about his involvement with Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. To date, there has been been very little individual accountability for members of Congress who were clearly involved in Trump’s illegal efforts to overturn the 2020 elections and hopefully, this is the beginning of some much overdue reckoning for members of Congress. It would be great if Texas newspapers would also inquire into whether public “constitutional conservative” Ted Cruz was likewise, a private insurrectionist.

Biden Says Bernie Didn’t Think Hillary Was Entitled To Nomination Despite Delegate Lead

Former Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, riding off his big primary win in South Carolina, was on the Sunday show circuit doing a much-deserved victory lap. On one of his circuit stops–ABC This Week with George Stephanopoulos–Biden made a notable dig against his chief opponent Bernie Sanders when he was asked whether Democrats should hand Sanders the nomination if he is leading in delegate count when the convention comes around.

Host Stephanopoulos :“Senator Sanders is likely to have a large delegate lead and it could open the possibility that he has the most pledged delegates going into the convention but not a majority. Why shouldn’t the candidate with the most pledged delegates going into the convention be the nominee?”

Biden:“For the same reason he[Sanders] didn’t think when Hillary[Clinton] had the most pledged delegates that she should be the nominee. The process is laid out….He wanted to make sure that the one with the most delegates didn’t become the automatic nominee when he was running against Hillary and all of a sudden he’s had an epiphany……”

The inconsistency Biden is pointing out is a very important one but you rarely hear it from the mainstream political punditry class. This is an especially important issue this year because there is a very good chance Democrats are headed for a contested convention. This idea usually put out there by Sanders’ surrogates in the media, that he must get the nomination if he is leading in delegates by the time the convention comes around or else there would be a “revolt”, needs some serious push back and Yours Truly was very happy to hear Joe Biden do exactly that.

Asked what argument he would use to convince super delegates to pick him over Sanders, Biden made yet another powerful argument that you rarely hear from the paid political punditry class and that is, Democrats also need to win down-ballot, and he’s the candidate best suited for delivering that outcome. Specifically, Biden said, “I can win the United States Senate as the candidate on top of the ticket. I can win the House and increase the number in the House. I can go into every state in the nation, I can go into purple states and we can win. I can win in places that I don’t think Bernie can win in a general election. In 2018…I went into 24 states, purple states for over 65 candidates they wanted me in and we won. They were asking me to come in. I don’t know if they asked Bernie, they may have, I doubt it, because they know I can be value added to their campaigns. I can pick up independents, I can pick up liberals, as well as moderate Democrats.”

Bottom line folks, this may sound rude/mean and will probably be interpreted as such by Bernie Sanders’ fans, but it is a fact that during the 2018 midterms, a lot of Democrats in purple states came to Biden and not Sanders for help with their campaigns, as Biden correctly pointed out. Democrats won big as a result. The question the paid political punditry class should be posing to Bernie Sanders’ surrogates is why Dem candidates, needing to win in purple states in 2018, never asked him for campaign help like they did Biden? The bigger question however should be why Bernie Sanders should be handed the nomination simply because he is leading in delegates by convention time, when he was totally opposed to that idea in 2016 when he was trailing Hillary Clinton? These are serious questions that Democrats need to address as the nomination contest heats up.

Dems Must Kill Washington State’s ConCon Proposal Before A Vote

Democrats have traditionally done very well in Washington state. The current Governor of WA Jay Inslee is a Democrat. Obama won WA both in 2008 & 2012. Hillary Clinton won WA in 2016. There’s clearly a lot ot Dem support in WA state and as we approach Midterms 2018, it is important that Dems point out GOP’s efforts to change the U.S. Constitution

According to the Washington state Legislature's website, the state's Constitutional Convention proposal HJM4006, was introduced on January 19 2017 and has 16 sponsors. Like Pennsylvania, Washington remains a targeted state(marked red on ConCon map above) meaning the ConCon measure has been introduced in the state legislature but is yet to be voted on by the full House and Senate (ConCon proposal still pending).

However there is a strange twist in Washington state's NoConCon battle. Turns out unlike in the previous states Yours Truly has highlighted, in WA, one of the ConCon proposal sponsors is a Democrat--a self-described "Berniecrat"--an obvious reference to 2016 Presidential aspirant Sen Bernie Sanders. Yours Truly only hopes that one of Rep Brian Blake's House colleagues will whisper in his ear that grassroots Democrats are totally opposed to Koch Brothers/ALEC's radical plan to change the U.S. Constitution--for any reason.

Here’s a HANDY LIST of the 15 WA GOP state politicians pushing Koch Brothers/ALEC’s radical plan to change the U.S. Constitution and thereby eliminate Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security

Bottomline, because Washington state is a Dem-friendly state the DNC must wage the NoConCon war there–especially in this midterm election year. Surely Dems can flip these 15 Red WA state House seats blue.

Dems Must Kill PA’s ConCon Measure Before A Vote

Pennsylvania is a crucial swing state in Presidential elections. Democrats have traditionally done very well in PA. Obama for example won PA both in 2008 & 2012. Hillary Clinton was favored by pollsters to win PA in 2016 but surprisingly lost to Donald Trump. The fact of the matter is there is a lot of Dem support in PA and as we approach Midterms 2018, it is important that Dems point out GOP’s efforts to change the constitution

Pennsylvania’s Constitutional Convention proposal HR100 was introduced in the PA Legislature on March 20, 2017 and has 7 sponsors–all Republicans. According to the PA Legislature website, the proposal is still lying in the PA Legislature with no vote taken on it yet.

That leaves us with only 7 PA GOP ConCons to go after(proposal sponsors). They are up for reelection so its important that we kick them and their ConCon proposal out of the PA Legislature in Midterms 2018

Here’s a HANDY LIST of the 7 PA GOP State politicians pushing Koch Brothers/ALEC’s radical plan to change the U.S. Constitution and thereby eliminate Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security

Bottomline, because Pennsylvania is a crucial swing state where Dems have traditionally done well, the DNC must wage the NoConCon war there–especially in this midterm election year. Surely Dems can flip these 7 PA State House seats blue.

Dems Must Wage The NoConCon War In Battleground States Like Minnesota

Constitutional Convention Map

In a recent post Yours Truly listed the 20 Texas GOP State Senators pushing the Koch Brothers /ALEC’s radical plan to change the U.S. Constitution. While Texas is a major Republican state that deserves the attention of the #NoConCon movement (those opposed to a Constitutional Convention), the battle also needs to be waged in Battleground States that are currently mulling the Koch Brothers’ radical idea.

One such battleground state is Minnesota where Democrats have traditionally done very well. Minnesota for example went for Obama in 2008 and 2012  and for Hillary Clinton in 2016. To have Minnesota State GOP flirting with Koch Brothers/ALEC’s radical plan to change the U.S. Constitution can reap huge benefits for Dems in Midterms 2018.

Records show that SF 2490 was introduced in the Minnesota Senate on 03/15/2018. The “authors”(really ALEC) of SF 2490  are Republican State Senators Roger C. Chamberlain, Mark W. Koran, Andrew Mathews, Torrey N. Westrom, and Bill Ingebrigtsen.

In the Minnesota House of Representatives HF2690 was introduced on 5/18/2017. The bill is “authored”(really ALEC) by these 17 Minnesota GOP House Representatives

Bottomline, Dems must make a run for the Minnesota Legislature using the radical GOP/Koch Brothers /ALEC’s radical plan to change the U.S. Constitution whose end run is the elimination of Medicare /Medicaid under the guise of “Balanced Budget Amendment.”

A Handy list of Texas GOP Politicians Pushing Koch Brothers/ALEC Radical Plan To Change The U.S. Constitution

In a previous post, Yours Truly highlighted a radical plan by the Koch Brothers and their outfit American Legislative Exchange Council(ALEC)  to get  Republican-controlled State legislatures to support their effort to Amend the U.S. Constitution and thereby ELIMINATE programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security that have greatly benefited the poor.

This rare constitutional maneuver referred to as Constitutional Convention (aka #ConCon in Twitter circles) or Convention of States would require the approval of 34 State Legislatures for it to initiate (begin debate). However for any proposed amendment to be ratified, it would require the approval of 38 State Legislatures. Because this is such a radical maneuver by the Koch Brothers and their State GOP enablers, our target should be to prevent them from getting to the 34 states required to begin the constitutional amendment process.

Texas has traditionally been a hotbed of Republican politics. It follows therefore that the Koch Brothers/ALEC would push their radical Constitutional Convention campaign heavily in the state---and they have. All elected Republican politicians in Texas have bought into the ConCon idea, from The Governor, Lt Governor, the two U.S. Senators and virtually all GOP State elected officials. The Texas Senate for example approved the ConCon idea on February 28, 2017 on a 20-11 straight party line vote. The same thing happened on May 4, 2017 when the Texas House of Representatives, adopted the Senate's proposal on a 94-51 straight party line vote. You would think that on an issue as consequential as changing the U.S. Constitution, the Texas GOP would at least strive for some support from Democrats, but no, they are controlled by what Koch Brothers/ALEC want, not what is in the best interests of the State.

Given the heavy investment Koch Brothers/ALEC have made in Texas as a ConCon state, it naturally follows that Texas also has to be ground zero for the #NoConCon movement--people like Yours Truly, opposed to Koch Brothers/ALEC radical idea to amend the U.S. Constitution. That of course begins by knowing who our enemies are--The Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Lt Governor Dan Patrick and the Texas GOP State Senators, without whose support the radical Koch Brothers/ALEC agenda would be dead on arrival

Below are the 20 Texas State Senators who supported Koch Brothers/ALEC radical plan to change the U.S. Constitution. Governor Abbott, Lt Governor Patrick and most of the GOP State Senators below are seeking re-election this November. Because the said Texas Senators are supporting Koch Brothers/ALEC's radical plan to kick Grandma and Grandpa out of their Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, let's return the favor and kick these shameful Republicans out of Austin this November. We owe that much to poor Grandma and Grandpa.

Koch Brothers And ALEC’s Real Plan Is To Abolish Medicare and Medicaid

In a previous post Yours Truly talked about a radical plan by Koch Brothers and its outfit American Legislative Exchange Council(ALEC) to change the U.S. Constitution. Here is a little explanation as to how they plan to do that and why you should be worried about it.

Article V of the U.S. Constitution provides two paths for amending the U.S. Constitution. The first one is by a two-third(2/3) vote by both chambers of the U.S. Congress(House & Senate). The other path, which Koch Brother/ALEC are gunning for is by getting two-thirds(2/3) of state legislatures to support such an amendment--the method commonly referred to as Convention of States. Two-thirds of state legislatures in the U.S. comes up to 34. In essence Koch Brothers/ALEC are trying to get 34 GOP-controlled state legislatures to support their effort by calling a Convention of States to amend the U.S. Constitution. Their argument is that because of crippling national deficits, the U.S. Constitution needs to be amended to include a provision that mandates the federal government to pass a balanced budget--the so called "Balanced Budget Amendment".

On its face this sounds like a very noble idea. However as is always the case with the GOP, the devil is in the details. What Koch Brothers/ALEC conveniently leave out of the debate as they push for this Balanced Budget Amendment is the fact that their "noble" efforts to balance the budget targets the social safety nets like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and even Public Education.

Critics(likely GOP) will certainly counter this argument by saying its a giant leap of faith--that simply wanting to balance the budget doesn't necessarily mean they want to eliminate/drastically cut Medicare and other social safety nets.

First of all as you can see from the featured image, abolishing Medicare and Medicaid was the Koch Brothers declared position in the 1980s. It is not too far-fetched to conclude that they are still pursuing that goal

Secondly but more importantly we have a very recent event yhat proves GOP's intentions as regards "entitlement" programs. We saw this a few months ago after the GOP passed the Tax Reform Bill. The major bone of contention prior to passage of the bill was the effect it was going to have on the national deficit. The GOP-controlled Congress ended up passing the bill eventhough the Congressional Budget Office(CBO) had projected it would cause massive deficits. A few weeks after President Trump had signed the bill into law House Speaker Paul Ryan spilled the dirty GOP secret, that inorder to address deficits that would result from the Tax bill, the GOP would start to tackle "entitlement" reform. He singled out Medicare and Medicaid as the biggest drivers of national debt and that they needed to be reformed.

House Speaker Ryan's rare moment of candor is to date the clearest evidence as to GOP's real intentions with Medicare and Medicaid.Eventhough this has always been the insider GOP position, they are terrified to say that in front of their base, most of who are seniors who rely on Medicare and Medicaid.

It was therefore very telling how quickly the GOP establishment silenced Speaker Ryan's entitlement talk, given the fact that 2018 is an election year.It appears even the GOP establishment knows that the way they want to go about balancing the budget is so radical that their own base would not suport it. Which is why as we approach Midterms 2018 Dems must expose the GOP/Koch Brothers/ALEC's radical mission to eliminate Medicare, Medicaid, & Social Security all under the guise of a "Balanced Budget Amendment."

Dangerous Koch Brothers Are Out To Change The U.S. Constitution

Yours Truly has repeatedly stated how The Mercers are and have been a major impediment to the Dem Agenda for a very long time. However the Mercers pale in comparison compared to their fellow Billionaire GOP Super Donors the Koch Brothers–Charles and David Koch. Unlike the Mercers who are using their financial clout to consolidate GOP political power, the Dangerous Kochs are on an entirely radical mission–to mobilize GOP leaning states into doing away with the U.S. Constitution as it’s currently written. To that effect they have enlisted the services of a group called American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). The Koch Brothers not only heavily fund ALEC, they sit on its Board.

So what exactly does ALEC do? The answer to that question will shock the average voter because what ALEC and State GOP legislators engage in is so repugnant, its borderline criminal. When voters in Red States (Republican) go out to vote for their state legislators, little do they know that when their elected legislators get to the State Capitols, they are not really governed by the voters wishes, but by this shady group ALEC. ALEC is basically a group of wealthy corporate lobbyists who tell the state legislators what legislation to pass. In many instances, ALEC lobbyists literally write down the proposed legislation themselves and hand them to state legislators to pass them as-is (no changes/edits). This is so repugnant because the Koch Brothers literally use ALEC to subvert the will of the people (Democracy). But subverting Democracy is by no means the end of ALEC/Koch Brothers’ radical agenda. They have now moved on to an even more radical agenda–this time to radically change the U.S. Constitution as its currently written.

The Koch Brothers through ALEC are currently mobilizing Republican-controlled states(with GOP majorities in state legislature) to call for a Convention of States, a rarely used Constitutional mechanism that can be used to change the U.S. Constitution. It gets a little complicated but it boils down to this–if they(Koch Brothers/ALEC) can get 34 state legislatures to hold a Convention of States, they can begin the process of changing the U.S. Constitution. They are deadly close to that magic  34 number–scary stuff indeed. The brilliant Election Integrity Advovcate Jennifer Cohn has done a lot of work in this regard and Yours Truly strongly suggests you check it out. This is the kind of deadly serious stuff the GOP is engaged in but you will never hear it from the mainstream media. Yours Truly will never understand why the DNC never uses this scary stuff to mobilize Dem voters.

As for now folks just remember that the Koch Brothers with their outfit ALEC are up to no good and we need to watch them. Bottom line, Dems must keep their eyes on the Dangerous Koch Brothers and inform voters about their efforts to Change the U.S. Constitution
