Did Kevin McCarthy Have An Affair With Congresswoman Renee Ellmers?

Former Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)

During the last few days the public has been inundated by unflattering mainstream media reports about Congresswoman Katie Hill (D-CA). This started when nude photos of her surfaced online showing her engaged in an affair with one of her female campaign staffers. Rep Hill initially defended her conduct, blaming the release of the photos on what she alleged was her spiteful ex-husband out to ruin her career. Her biggest problem however was not the fact that her nude photos had been published against her will, but rather that they proved she was engaged in an affair with her campaign staffer–a violation of congressional code of conduct. With Speaker Pelosi, a known disciplinarian at the helm, Rep Hill read the tea leaves and correctly opted for resignation.

With Rep Hill’s resignation however, new questions are emerging about an explosive story that first surfaced in 2015 regarding an alleged long term romantic affair between Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and then Rep Renee Ellmers (R-NC) both of whom were married with children at the time (Ellmers no longer serving). Rep Kevin McCarthy was considered by many of his House Republican colleagues as the natural replacement for then outgoing Speaker John Boehner.

Many of Rep McCarthy’s Republican supporters did not give much credence to the rumors about an extramarital affair and he was still considered the heavy favorite to succeed Speaker Boehner. However in a strange and shocking twist, right before the votes were cast for the Speakership, Rep McCarthy took himself out of contention (withdrew)–something his colleagues reasonably interpreted as an admission of guilt. In the end, Paul Ryan succeeded John Boehner as the 54th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Both Reps McCarthy and Ellmers vehemently denied the allegations, with Ellmers calling them “batsh*t crazy” and adding, “As someone who has been targeted by completely false accusations and innuendo, I have been moved by the outpouring of support and prayers from my colleagues, constituents and friends. Now I will be praying for those who find it acceptable to bear false witness.”

Yours Truly will not go out on a limb and accuse the two members of congress of having an extramarital affair based on the 2015 allegations. However, given the recent Katie Hill resignation, reasonable people will agree that someone needs to look into these allegations so as to establish conclusively that there was no affair between McCarthy and Ellmers. Nothing in the media reports suggest that there was any investigation into the allegations against these two members of congress. The media simply accepted their denials as fact.

In addition to that, reasonable people will also agree that Rep McCarthy’s abrupt decision not to pursue the Speakership gives these allegations some modicum of weight. Why would Rep McCarthy relinquish a position as cherished as the House Speakership simply because someone was spreading baseless rumors about him? Surely this knee-jerk reaction by Rep McCarthy flies in the face of Rep Ellmers’ characterization of the rumors as “batsh*t crazy”.

Bottom line folks, Rep Katie Hill was a young and very promising member of congress whose political career came to a crushing halt because she exercised poor judgement while serving. It is only fair that Reps McCarthy be held to the same standard, and if found to have similarly exercised poor judgement while serving, be shown the exit door. Congressional code of conduct is meaningless if the public views it as only applicable to one political party and not the other.

Individuals Shouldering 50% Of Tax Burden, Corporations Only 6%

CNN’s OutFront with Erin Burnett shared some stunning statistics yesterday showing that thanks to Trump’s/GOP’s tax cuts, individuals are now shouldering a staggering 50% of the tax burden as compared to corporations’ only 6%–a totally revolting, even immoral statistic

Erin Burnett posed the question to Kevin Hassett, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers at Trump’s White House, “Individuals are paying all the taxes to subsidize the corporate tax cuts?”

Kevin Hassett’s explanation was that as a result of Trump/GOP tax cuts, there has been a capital spending boom which has resulted in higher wages and therefore higher individual tax contributions. Specifically Hassett said in response to Erin Burnett’s question, “If there’s a big surge in wages, people pay tax on those wages and therefore the share of personal income goes up. So if you have a wage boom then you’re also going to have higher taxes on the personal income side and it’s not like a shocking terrible thing like you[Erin] portray it.”

Yours Truly is not an expert economist and will not play one today by analyzing the merits and demerits of Kevin Hassett’s explanation. Reasonable people will agree however that there’s something inherently wrong when individuals in a country that’s home to some of the world’s richest corporations shoulder 50% of the tax burden while the rich corporations shoulder only 6%.

Bottom line it is the height of inequity, even immorality for individuals in the world’s leading economy to shoulder 50% of the tax burden while corporations–some of the richest in the world–only carry 6%. This speaks of a growing trend among modern Republicans where corporate interests are placed ahead of the people’s welfare. Democrats must highlight this sickening GOP trend as we head towards the 2020 elections and upon winning, work towards a more moral/equitable economy that looks out for working Americans instead of exploiting them as Trump’s economy apparently is.

GOP’s Preexisting Conditions Lies

In case you missed it, there was a great Rachel Maddow segment recently where she exposed how Republicans including Sen Ted Cruz, after finding out how polls (including by Fox News) consistently show that healthcare is the top issue heading into this November’s elections, are now drastically twisting their records on healthcare.According to Maddow, voters not only consider healthcare their most important issue, but support Obamacare’s preexisting conditions rules by a whopping 75%. The full Maddow segment is available here but relevant clip is below.

Stunned by the revelation that American voters do not care about president Trump’s numerous conspiracy theories including the latest “migrant caravan”, Republicans are now shockingly saying that they have supported preexisting conditions all along. Think about that folks–Sen Ted Cruz is on record as having said that his opposition to Obamacare’s preexisting conditions requirements is that they are unconstitutional. In addition to that, some of the Republicans now professing their support for preexisting conditions are currently listed as plaintiffs in a lawsuit attacking preexisting conditions.

For the record, Republicans nationwide have now switched their records on preexisting conditions as we approach the November elections. Yours Truly however wants grassroots Democrats to focus their attention on these key 4 GOP candidates for U.S. Senate because these are seats that are crucial to Dems taking over the Senate from Republican control. Grassroots Democrats need to spread the word and call out Ted Cruz(TX), Martha McSally(AZ), Dean Heller(NV) and Kevin Kramer(ND) for their blatant lies about supporting preexisting conditions.

Bottom line this great Maddow segment proves once again that even though the mainstream gives Trump’s conspiracy theories way too much attention, American voters are not buying into Trump’s lies. There are many theories that have been advanced as to why a Democratic “blue wave” is coming this November. This revelation by Maddow that American voters are not concerned about the “caravans” or whatever else Republicans are preoccupied with, but instead are worried about the key Dem issue of healthcare, is the strongest indicator yet of a Dem “blue wave”.
