Rep Liz Cheney Discusses Primary Loss, Future Plans On ABC’s This Week Show

$upport via Cash App

Rep Liz Cheney(R-WY) sat down for an interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl, three days after her landslide primary loss to Trump-backed challenger Harriet Hageman, to discuss her future political plans. The interview aired on ABC’s This Week show (08/21/22) and as many expected, Cheney’s lopsided loss was in no way shape or form, an end to her political career, but rather, a beginning of a new political chapter.

Rep Cheney said this moments after her loss to Hagenan on 08/16/22: “We must be very clear-eyed about the threat we face, and about what is required to defeat it. I have said since January 6th, that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office, and I mean that.”

Asked whether she regretted the fact that her staunch opposition to former President Trump had cost her a leadership position in the House and eventually her seat, Rep Cheney responded (2:51): “No regrets. You know, I feel sad about where my party is, I feel sad about the way that too many of my colleagues have responded to what I think is a great moral test and challenge of our time, a great moment to determine whether or not people are going to stand up on behalf of the democracy, and on behalf of our republic.” Rep Cheney added that she has heard from several prominent leaders after her primary loss, thanking her for putting the country over her party. One such call, she said, came from President Biden.

Asked what Trump’s continuing grip on the GOP says about the party, Rep Cheney said the party, both at the state and national level, “is very sick.” She specifically said(4:11):“I think one, it says that people continue to believe the lie, they continue to believe what he’s saying, which is very dangerous. I think it also tells you that large portions of our party, including the leadership of our party, both at the state level in Wyoming, as well as on a national level with RNC, is very sick, and that we really have got to decide whether or not we are going to be a party based on substance and policy, or whether we are going to remain as so many of our party are today, in the grips of a dangerous former president.”

Asked about the argument by former President Trump and others, that her landslide primary loss is proof that the principles she is fighting for are not shared by the GOP, Rep Cheney responded (5:03): “Well, doesn’t that tell you something? What I’m fighting for is the Constitution. What I’m fighting for is the perpetuation of the republic, what I’m fighting for is the fact that elections have to matter, and that when the election is over and the courts have ruled, and the electoral college has met, that the president of the United States has to respect the results of the election, and if Donald Trump’s spokesman says that those are principles that are inconsistent with Donald Trump’s views, and inconsistent with the Republican Party’s views, I think that ought to give every American pause about who Donald Trump is, and about what the Republican Party stands for today.”

Asked about what her new political organization is going to focus on, Rep Cheney said one of her primary objectives will be to campaign against “election deniers”.

Asked about her views on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, and specifically, whether he should become Speaker if the GOP takes over the House, Rep Cheney said (6:22): “My views about Kevin McCarthy are very clear. The Speaker of the House is the second in line for the presidency. It requires somebody who understands and recognizes their duty, their oath, their obligation, and he’s been completely unfaithful to the constitution, and demonstrated a total lack of understanding of the significance and importance of the role of Speaker, so I don’t believe he should be Speaker of the House, and I think that’s been very clear.”

Asked whether she would support Trump’s acolytes like Senator Ted Cruz(R-TX) or Josh Hawley(R-MO) if one of them secured the GOP presidential nomination in 2024, Rep Cheney responded (9:50): “It would be very difficult when you look at somebody like Josh Hawley, or somebody like Ted Cruz, both of whom know better, both of whom know exactly what the role of Congress is in terms of our constitutional obligations with respect to presidential elections, and yet both of whom took steps that fundamentally threatened the constitutional order and structure in the aftermath of the last election, so in my view, they both have made themselves unfit for future office.”

Asked about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who many view as the number two contender for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination after Trump, Rep Cheney said(10:28): “DeSantis is somebody who is right now campaigning for election deniers, and I think that is something that people have to have real pause about. Either you fundamentally believe in and will support our constitutional structure, or you don’t.”

Asked whether if she runs for president in 2024, it will be out of a genuine desire to win, or simply sending a pro-democracy message, Rep Cheney responded in relevant part(10:59):“Any decision that I make about doing something that significant and that serious, would be with the intention of winning, and because I think I would be the best candidate.” She punted when asked whether running as an Independent remained an option for her saying(11:19), “I’m not going to go down that path anymore in terms of speculating.”

Bottom line folks, Rep Liz Cheney is not going anywhere. Her primary loss will free her from the bondage that is Trump’s GOP, and allow her to pursue loftier goals–the fight for democracy. She said one of her primary goals will be to defeat “election deniers”, which Yours Truly hopes includes one Senator Ted Cruz, who is up for reelection in 2024. We’re going to need you Liz, in the Lone Star state.

Fox News’ Brit Hume: Republicans Are Hoping Trump Will Be “Gone” After 1/6 Committee’s Findings

$upport via Cash App

Fox News Senior Political Analyst Brit Hume confirmed on Monday(06/13/22) what many have suspected all along, and that is, establishment Republicans are secretly hoping the January 6th Committee’s findings will expose so much about former President Trump’s conduct leading up to and including the day of the insurrection, that he will effectively be “gone” for 2024 presidential election purposes. Hume added that many GOP insiders are afraid to say so publicly for fear of Trump’s thuggish supporters, but the consensus was that a Trump presidential nomination in 2024 will cause the GOP to lose the White House again to Democrats. WHOA!!

Britt Hume: “If they[January 6th Committee]succeed either by damaging him or staining him such that he is either unable for legal or political reasons to run again, they might end up finding out that they’ve done the Republican Party a a great service because I think a great many Republicans think they can’t win with Trump at the head of the ticket again. They are afraid of his supporters, [they]don’t want to come out against him directly, but they would like him to go away. If the effect of this committee is to make his possible candidacy go away, I think a great many Republicans would privately be very glad.”

There’s no other way to interpret Brit Hume’s analysis on Fox News other than, establishment Republicans are secretly rooting for the January 6th Committee, hoping that Rep Liz Cheney & Co. will deliver the GOP’s ultimate wish–finally getting rid of Trump and his hold on the Republican Party. They desperately want him gone, but cannot say that publicly, for fear of his thuggish fans–a sad state of affairs indeed for a party that constantly brags about “manhood” and its associated traits.

Bottom line folks, it has been clear to any reasonable observer, that ever since the January 6th insurrection, many serious Republicans considered Trump dead for presidential election purposes. The only reason they haven’t said this publicly, is as Brit correctly pointed out–fear of Trump’s thuggish fans. There is no question that many of them, including his supposed mouthpieces at Fox News, are secretly hoping that the January 6th Committee will finally deliver a fatal blow to his political aspirations, keeping him “gone”. This of course opens up another nightmare scenario for Republicans–a breakaway MAGA third party, which will almost certainly lead to Dems retaining the White House in 2024. Trump in jail will prevent a breakaway MAGA party scenario. All in all, folks, brace yourselves for some very interesting political months leading up to 2024.

Reports Of Growing Tension Between Trump And Gov DeSantis Over 2024 Election

$upport via Cash App

CNN’s Gabby Orr reported on New Day(11/19/21) that tension is growing between former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over the 2024 election. Trump is apparently upset that Gov DeSantis has not yet stated publicly that he won’t challenge him for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, if he decides to run. Trump is reportedly fuming to close aides, telling them that he “made” DeSantis.

If this reporting holds, it will be the clearest sign yet, that Gov DeSantis’ rise in the national GOP ranks, and his potential 2024 presidential run, has caught Trump’s attention, and not in a good way.

Gabby Orr told New Day Host **John Berman: “As Donald Trump tracks very closely what Republican presidential hopefuls for 2024 have said about challenging him if he does decide to go for a third presidential run, he has been increasingly irritated with the cardinal sin that Governor Ron DeSantis is committing, by not saying anything of the sort. He has not come out and said ‘I will not challenge Donald Trump if he decides to run in 2024’, he has not even said that he is interested in 2024 and that, according to aides to Donald Trump…is really irking the former President. My colleague Steve Contorno and I talked to several people close to both DeSantis and Donald Trump who said, there is a noticeable strain on the relationship and that [former]President Trump will not be satisfied until Ron DeSantis comes out and unequivocally says he will not challenge the former president in a GOP presidential primary.

Gabby Orr added that while Trump is not personally attacking Gov DeSantis in his private conversations with allies, he is constantly reminding them that he “made” DeSantis, an obvious implication that DeSantis should be loyal to him. Trump’s craving for loyalty pledges is nothing new. The only question is whether rising GOP star DeSantis will clip his wings to appease him as we head towards 2024.

Bottom line folks, the 2024 GOP presidential primary will be a Trumpism referendum–whether the Republican Party continues with Trump as it’s leader, or whether the party settles on someone else–a Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, Mike Pompeo, Nikki Haley–as the new flag bearer. It will be very interesting to see how Florida Governor DeSantis navigates the choppy waters ahead, now that he knows he has TeamTrump scared.

Why Not Run For The U.S. Senate In 2020?

With many Democrats gunning for the White House in 2020 (the current count at 20+), the question that is increasingly popping up among grassroots Democrats is why some of these excellent candidates are not running for the U.S. Senate instead?

Every week we get stories from the mainstream media about how Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is refusing to bring bills passed by House Democrats to a vote in the U.S. Senate. One would think, given these dire circumstances that Democrats would focus heavily on recapturing the U.S. Senate in addition to the White House in 2020. Strangely however, all the talk is about who is running for President, even though as mean as this sounds, some of these potentially excellent Senate candidates have zero chance of securing the Dem presidential nomination.

Yours Truly recently raised this very point on Twitter and the reaction was almost unanimous that some of these Democrats currently gunning for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, should focus instead on taking over the U.S. Senate.

In a recent post, Yours Truly laid out the 22 GOP Senators up for reelection in 2020 and the fact that everything remaining constant, Dems will need to flip at least 3 seats to recapture the U.S. Senate. Senators Susan Collins (Maine), Cory Gardner (Colorado) and by some estimates John Cornyn (Texas) are GOP Senators most pundits think could lose to a Dem opponent in 2020. Why for example shouldn’t John Hickenlooper, who by all accounts is struggling in his presidential campaign, go after Cory Gardner’s Senate seat instead?

The same question applies to Texans Beto O’Rourke and Julian Castro re John Cornyn’s Senate seat, and Montana Governor Steve Bullock re Senator Steve Daines’ seat. Bottom line folks, as the Dem presidential contest chugs along, it would be helpful if the mainstream media, especially the cable TV punditry class starts asking some of the long shot candidates, why they should not be gunning for the U.S. Senate instead? Better yet, this would be an excellent question for the debate moderators at the next Dem debate in Detroit slated for the end of July

The Kamala Harris-Biden Conundrum For Democrats

Yours Truly has repeatedly said despite opposing viewpoints by paid mainstream media pundits that U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) is the presumptive favorite to win the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination for the 2020 elections. Yours Truly began saying this way back in April 2018 with this post and has repeated the assertion through the various iterations of the popular #Dem2020Poll.

Senator Kamala Harris’ political stardom hit mainstream media pundits like a brick between the eyes this past Thursday (06/27/2019) following her stellar debate performance where she methodically cast Biden as a racial segregation sympathizer–a near fatal blow in the eyes of the ethnically diverse Democratic Party voting base. Sen Kamala Harris all but busted the grassroots Democrats’ fantasies of a Biden-Harris no-brainer ticket.

Clearly Yours Truly has been way ahead of the curve touting Sen Kamala Harris’ political stardom(deserved chest-thumping) so it’s only fair that Yours Truly also direct your attention to a potential quagmire the Kamala Harris stardom may pose to the Dem presidential chances in 2020–the aforementioned Kamala Harris-Biden conundrum. Here’s how it plays out.

Most political pundits agree that Joe Biden would be a great general election candidate for Democrats in 2020 because he has a chance of winning back the rural White Obama voters who Trump won in 2016. The same political pundits also agree that a Joe Biden-Kamala Harris ticket in 2020 would be unstoppable–a no-brainer ticket if you will. There is a problem however for Democrats with this seemingly easy solution to the Trump problem. As Yours Truly stated in these tweets, there is a very strong possibility that Sen Kamala Harris will beat Joe Biden for the Democratic Party’s nomination effectively busting the Biden-Harris fantasy.

How then do Democrats turn around and tell Sen Kamala Harris, “Congratulations for winning the nominations but we’d be better off with the no-brainer Biden-Harris ticket?” Political pundits agree that Sen Harris would be a terrific general election candidate in any other presidential election cycle but going up against Trump, with the attendant race-baiting that is sure to ensue, there’a a very good chance she may lose the general election for reasons that have nothing to do with her qualifications. Simply put, even though the modern Democratic Party is more inclined to nominate a Kamala Harris, the fact of the matter is that against Trump, Biden is a better general election candidate and more importantly a Biden-Harris ticket is a sure winner in 2020. What to do about this tricky 2020 situation confronting Democrats as we go through the nomination process is one that deserves a lot of open and frank debate among the party faithful especially given the fact that the desire to unseat Trump in 2020 appears to trump everything else (forgive the pun).

Bottom line as we go through the excitement of the presidential nomination process, we as Democrats also need to start seriously thinking about the conundrum the Trump presidency poses on the Democratic Party’s nomination process. How do we make sure that the person we nominate to go up against Trump is also the best general election candidate? These are the tough topics Yours Truly hopes paid mainstream media pundits will expound on as the presidential nomination contest progresses. The 2020 presidential election is still very far away and a lot of twists and turns are bound to take place and therefore as Trump famously says, “we’ll see what happens.” Also importantly, if Sen Harris ends up as the 2020 Dem nominee, please make sure to remind the “expert” presidential prognosticators (Nate Silver, et al) that the real deal @emolclause has arrived!!

Mitch McConnell Rewards Lobbyist’s Wife With Federal Judgeship

A bombshell segment on MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow show says Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell expedited the confirmation of U.S. District Judge Wendy Vitter as payback for the work her lobbyist husband David Vitter did to land an aluminium plant linked to Russian Oligarch Oleg Deripaska in Kentucky. David Vitter, a former Republican U.S. Senator from Louisiana is now a lobbyist for Rusal, the Russian firm tied to Oligarch Oleg Deripaska and previously sanctioned by the U.S. government. It is Rusal that has committed $200 million to build an aluminium plant in Mitch McConnell’s Kentucky.

According to the Maddow segment, the confirmation of Wendy Vitter as a federal judge had stalled because a lot of Republicans did not feel she was qualified for the job. However according to Maddow, five weeks after her lobbyist husband David Vitter called McConnell confirming that Rusal will invest in Kentucky, McConnell used his position as Senate Majority Leader to expedite Wendy Vitters confirmation–a clear cut case of pay-for-play corruption and abuse of power.

Maddow specifically said, “Within five weeks of David Vitter calling Mitch McConnell to tell him that Rusal was going to put this plant in Kentucky, Rusal was going to dump hundreds of millions of dollars into Mitch McConnell’s home state, within five weeks of that call, the nomination of David Vitter’s wife to be a federal judge, a nomination that had been languishing for a year and a half because she was so humiliatingly and embarrassingly and obviously unqualified for the job, whose confirmation hearing went so badly it went viral and got her nomination buried, turns out within five weeks of Mitch McConnell getting that call from David Vitter saying hey I got an aluminium plant we are going to put in your home state thanks from Oleg, within five weeks of that call, Wendy Vitter’s nomination got pulled off the trash heap by McConnell and Mitch McConnell expedited it, put it on top of the list and now she’s a federal judge for life. Must be nice.”

Bottom line, there are already a lot of questions surrounding Mitch McConnell and Russia that warrant an investigation. This new pay-for-play twist involving a federal judge should definitely be explored further both by Democrats and the mainstream media. Simply put, McConnell should not be allowed to abuse his position as Senate Majority Leader to push bills in the Senate that seemingly benefit him personally. More importantly, McConnell should not be allowed to continue ruining the credibility of federal courts with pay-for-play confirmation of federal judges. McConnell has already done enough damage to the credibility of federal courts with the Kavanaugh incident.

Harris-Warren The Emergent Dem Power Ticket

The results of the popular #Dem2020Poll not only show a meteoric rise for Senator Elizabeth Warren but also that grassroots Democrats are very open to an all-female Harris-Warren/Warren-Harris ticket in 2020.

Yours Truly began running the popular #Dem2020Poll to gauge who grassroots Democrats wanted to win the 2020 Dem nomination for president way before the November 2018 midterm elections. As expected, there have been a lot of twists and turns as to who grassroots Democrats want to go up against Trump in 2020. In the beginning it was very clear that grassroots Democrats wanted Kamala Harris at the top of the Dem ticket with Joe Kennedy III as her running mate. This later changed to Joe Biden being the favorite, with Kamala Harris as his running mate. After the November 2018 elections, Beto O’Rourke became the favorite, with grassroots Democrats favoring a Beto/Harris or Harris/Beto ticket. Notice that whatever Dem ticket is hot at any given time, Kamala Harris is somehow always in the mix–something Yours Truly predicted from the very beginning—TeamHarris better pay Yours Truly for this expert punditry folks.

Yours Truly memorialized all these #Dem2020Poll twists and turns in this November 2018 post. Well it turns out that we have yet another twist—the Elizabeth Warren twist. In previous #Dem2020Polls, Elizabeth Warren did not perform well and was consistently unable to secure more than 10% of the total votes cast. Recently however, it’s a whole new story. Elizabeth Warren appears to have found her stride and is at this juncture one of the hottest names in the #Dem2020Poll. Yours Truly will leave it to the paid pundits on the Sunday morning talk shows to figure out the real reason behind Elizabeth Warren’s meteoric rise in the polls. Notably however, there appears to be a great appetite for an all-female Harris-Warren/Warren-Harris ticket so much so that they are crushing a Biden-Buttigieg ticket. Yours Truly didn’t see this coming.

Naturally, valid questions have been raised about the viability of an all-female Dem ticket going up against chauvinist Trump in rural and middle America, the tweet below serving as Exhibit A. Again Yours Truly will let the paid pundits on the Sunday morning talk shows wrestle with the viability of an all-female Dem ticket in 2020.

Bottom line, Warren’s 2020 stock is clearly on the rise. How higher up she goes remains to be seen. There’s still a lot of time from now until the Iowa caucuses and many other twists and turns are bound to happen before then. All Yours Truly can leave you with at this juncture is the famous Trumpian phrase, “We’ll see what happens.”

Beto O’Rourke Leading The 2020 Dem Presidential Sweepstakes

Beto O’Rourke

As was expected, the Dem presidential nomination fight began in earnest the day after the November 2018 elections with several Democrats either outrightly declaring their intention to run for president in 2020 or strongly hinting at that.

Several months prior to the November 2018 elections, Yours Truly began running the popular #Dem2020Poll to gauge who grassroots Democrats favored as their presidential nominee in 2020. The results of the #Dem2020Poll initially showed Senator Kamala Harris(D-CA) and Rep Joe Kennedy III as the top contenders for the 2020 Dem presidential nomination with more people favoring a Harris/Kennedy ticket.

However in May 2018, following speculation that former Vice President Joe Biden was considering a presidential run, he immediately shot to the top of the #Dem2020Poll with most people preferring a Biden/Harris ticket.

In September 2018 Sen Kamala Harris shot back to the top of the Dem 2020 presidential sweepstakes due to the Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings.

Well it appears everything has changed after the November 2018 elections and grassroots Democrats now overwhelmingly want Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke to either head the 2020 presidential ticket or be someone’s running mate.

At this juncture it is also important to address the Bernie Sanders issue. Yours Truly has deliberately left him out in previous #Dem2020Polls because he is not a registered Democrat. This issue has caused a lot of controversy and division among grassroots Dems so for the sake of party cohesion, Bernie Sanders now features in all the polls. Beyond the party cohesion argument, reasonable people will agree that a #Dem2020Poll without Bernie Sanders is not realistic/credible because like him or not, he has a lot of support among registered Democrats.

Bottom line 2020 is still very far away and a lot of twists and turns are bound to take place. As Trump himself regularly says, “We’ll see what happens.”

GOP Candidates Being Recruited To Primary Trump In 2020

Turns out that while Trump is flexing his political muscles promising his adoring fans that he will crush any future Democratic opponent, efforts are underway within his own GOP to primary him in 2020. According to a CNBC article, conservative columnist and prominent NeverTrumper Bill Kristol is apparently actively recruiting Republicans to primary Trump in 2020, a move that is certain to enrage the criticism averse Trump. He has apparently talked to Gov John Kasich(Ohio), Sen Ben Sassse(Neb) and Sen Jeff Flake(AZ) about a possible 2020 Trump primary challenge.

The NeverTrumpers have largely remained silent during Trump’s presidency but now with all the troubles, legal and otherwise, engulfing the Trump administration, they are starting to voice their opposition to his presidency again. This could prove highly problematic to the GOP establishment because Trump will certainly take opposition from within as “disloyal” rebellion and wage a fierce war against his critics.

Yours Truly, a political sage at this juncture has long predicted a GOP split before 2020 and this llatest development has all the markings of one.

My prediction however has been that it is Romney who will primary Trump and TrumpRussia will be central to his challenge

It will be interesting to see how the GOP civil war plays out as we approach 2020. Bottom line when it does finally happen just remind the cable TV pundits that grassroots @Emolclause called it a long time ago. Remember folks, it is Mitt Romney who will give Trump a run for his money, leading to the GOP split.

Kamala Harris Back On Top Of The 2020 Dem Prez Sweepstakes

Joe Biden & Sen Kamala Harris(D-CA)

In case you missed the latest #Dem2020Poll, it appears Senator Kamala Harris(D-CA) is back on top of the 2020 Dem presidential sweepstakes.

You will remember that at the beginning of our #Dem2020Poll, Sen Kamala Harris consistently won the poll especially when paired with Rep Joe Kennedy III. Biden then came along and took the lead from Senator Harris right around May 2018 and has stayed in the lead ever since.

This recent poll putting Harris on top is most likely the result of Sen Harris’ stellar performance at the Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearings where she pestered the nominee with pointed questions about a whole host of issues most notably the ongoing Mueller probe.

Bottom line 2020 is still very far away and a lot of twists and turns are bound to take place. Yours Truly is also very aware of your usual refrain, “Let’s worry about the Midterms first.”–a valid critique. Folks, just relax and play along will you?
