GOPโ€™s Long History Of Threatening Prosecutors Into Submission

$upport via Cash App

A bombshell segment on the 05/20/24 edition of The Rachel Maddow Show (TRMS) delved into the GOP’s long history of using political pressure to scuttle criminal investigations and prosecutions targeting them.

Maddow’s intent was to bring attention to the Republican political attacks currently being leveled against Fulton County DA Fani Willis, as she tries to hold former President Trump accountable for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential elections in Georgia.

It is widely assumed by many, that the political attacks currently playing out against DA Willis are somehow novel, or totally unheard of in America, when as Maddow clearly illustrates, there is a very long and sordid history of Republican politicians successfully employing similar tactics in the past.

The full Maddow segment (YouTube) is available here for context, but my posts on X(formerly Twitter) get to the crux of her argument, and that is, the Republican attacks on Fulton County DA Fani Willis are nothing knew. Republicans have been doing these political pressure campaigns against prosecutors dating as far back as the 1940s. Such pressure campaigns have largely evaded media scrutiny because as she puts it, they make the country and all the stakeholders look bad.

As Maddow correctly points out, it’s incumbent upon any democracy-loving individual, to step up and defend DA Fani Willis, or any other similarly situated prosecutor, against such political pressure campaigns. They are antithetical to a free and democratic society.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo:โ€Texas Is Being Run From Maralagoโ€

$upport via Cash App

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo appeared on MSNBCโ€™s The Rachel Maddow Show (09/24/2021), where she blasted elected Republicans in Texas for giving in to former President Trumpโ€™s baseless demands for an audit into the stateโ€™s 2020 election results. The decision by the Texas Secretary of Stateโ€™s office to conduct an audit into the election results of Collin, Dallas, Harris and Tarrant counties, came literally a few hours after Trumpโ€™s demand, which led a visibly upset Judge Hidalgo to tell host Maddow that Texas was โ€œbeing run from Maralago.โ€

Judge Hidalgo told Maddow:โ€œWe have to remember we had incredibly successful elections here in Harris County in 2020. We had innovations that led to record turnouts from both parties, the highest in 30 years, I mean it was beautiful, and since then, no evidence has come out that would in any way cause the need for this kind of audit. All weโ€™ve seen is [former]President Trump exhorting the state, or [Governor]Abbott, to have this auditโ€ฆThe reality of it is Texas is being run from Maralago, and that is dangerous, and itโ€™s not appropriateโ€ฆitโ€™s extremely concerning.โ€

Judge Hidalgo added that time had come for politicians in Washington to get off the sidelines, and actively join the fight against voter suppression in the states, telling host Maddow, โ€œWe need the federal government to act, I mean, this has gone too farโ€ฆ This should be another call to action. Weโ€™ve got the writing on the wall. Weโ€™ve got to get off our chairs and get moving on all this.โ€

Bottom line folks, as Judge Hidalgo correctly pointed out, time has come for some decisive action to be taken against these naked efforts by Republicans at the state level, to restrict the voting rights of minorities. Democrats in Washington cannot just sit on the sidelines, and watch their counterparts in Republican-led states like Texas, go to war against GOPโ€™s efforts to restrict minority voting rights. Simply put, time has come for Democrats in Washington to finally do away with the filibuster, and institute a national voting standard geared towards making it easier for people to vote, as opposed to GOPโ€™s scheme of limiting access to the ballot box. As Judge Hidalgo correctly put it, congressional Democrats need to โ€œget off their chairs and get movingโ€ on a comprehensive federal voting rights law.

Parler Notified FBI 50 Times About Potential Violence On January 6th

$upport via Cash App

Rep Jackie Speier (D-CA) made a bombshell revelation on MSNBCโ€™s All In show(06/15/21), that the conservative social media network Parler, sent as many as 50 emails to the FBI, trying to warn them about potential violence on January 6th. Shockingly, none of Parlerโ€™s alarming emails made it to FBI Director Chris Wrayโ€™s desk. Rep Speier is a member of the House Oversight Committee which has been investigating Parler for itโ€™s role in the January 6th DC insurrection. The documents Parler provided the House Oversight Committee, clearly show that the conservative social media network did its part as far as notifying authorities, and that it was the FBI who dropped the ball.

Rep Speier told host Chris Hayes: โ€œI was stunned when it became known that Parler, a conservative social media website, contacted the FBI with emails fifty times, and those fifty emails never reached the Director[Chris Wray]. One of those emails talks about โ€˜Congress has to hear glass breaking, and doors being kicked in, and blood being shed. This is the time to get violent. We are at war.โ€™ Now, if Parlerโ€ฆthinks these are alarming and sends them to the FBI, and it doesnโ€™t get elevated, then weโ€™ve got a serious problem within the FBI in terms of assessing intelligence.โ€ How some intelligence analyst at the FBI decided that this was not serious enough, either for a concrete plan of action, or to be brought to Director Wrayโ€™s attention, is certainly grounds for a congressional investigation.

Prior to this bombshell revelation by Parler, the FBI had largely been spared from the publicโ€™s criticism of the intelligence failures that led to the insurrection. Most of the blame was pinned on the Capitol Police, the military(National Guard), and to some extent the Department of Homeland Security. This Parler revelation totally changes the ball game, and redirects the focus towards the FBI.

It bears pointing out that even before the Parler bombshell, people like Sen Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) were already raising a lot of questions as to why the FBI was not able to stop the DC insurrection, and the bureauโ€™s involvement in other scandals that plagued the Trump administration.

Bottom line folks, with every passing day, it becomes clearer and clearer that the January 6th DC insurrection was a totally preventable incident. All the warnings were out there for any curious person to pick up on. Why the people whose job it is to prevent such incidents from happening, either deliberately, or through negligence, ignored such clear warnings, is an issue the U.S. Congress must absolutely get to the bottom of. Congress owes this to the families who needlessly lost loved ones on that fateful day.

Sen Joni Ernst Busted Again Talking About Cuts To Medicare, Medicaid, SS

$upport via Cash App

Sen Joni Ernst (R-Iowa)

An audio recording of Sen Joni Ernst(R-Iowa) telling a group of GOP donors that there needs to be โ€œchangesโ€(read cuts) to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security has surfaced. Youโ€™ll remember that Sen Ernst made similar remarks at a town hall in September 2019 where she said Congress needs to meet behind closed doors to address these programsโ€“essentially gut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in secret.

In the latest audio, a person at the GOP event can be heard saying, โ€œEven without the additional spending weโ€™re already going bankruptโ€ฆthe biggest driver of that being entitlements. It is interesting hearing your classmate [Sen]David Perdue. Heโ€™s been pretty frank about the changes that need to happen with Medicare and Medicaid. Are you on the same page with him on that?

Sen Ernst responded, โ€œI think we [Republican Senators]all are because we all understand our non discretionary spending is growing like this. Everybody focuses on the discretionary spending because thatโ€™s what we have control over in Congress. The rest is on auto pilot and itโ€™s out of control. So we have to figure out ways to honor the commitments that have been made and make changes for the future.โ€

For the record Sen David Perdue(R-GA) has been very vocal about his desire to reign in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security spending in an effort to address the ballooning federal deficit. Sen Joni Ernst has also flirted with this idea previously but unlike Sen Perdue, is afraid to say so in public. Why wonโ€™t Sen Joni Earnst, who is up for reelection in 2020, look Iowans in their eyes and tell them that she wants cuts to their Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits?

Bottom line folks, Americans elect politicians and send them to Washington with the understanding that the said politicians will in turn look out for their interests. All national polls indicate that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security remain very popular programs among Americans, including Iowans. Where, as here, Sen Joni Earnst appears hell bent on gutting such programs, she owes Iowans an explanationโ€“publicly. Simply put, Sen Ernst should tell Iowans in public, what she says all the time at private GOP gatherings and that is, she wants cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security programs. Iowans deserve a Senator who will level with them.

Meet the 23 House Republicans Hiding Trumpโ€™s Tax Returns

$upport via Cash App

After news that Rhode Islandโ€™s Senate approved a measure requiring all presidential candidates to release 5 years of their tax returns in order to be placed on the stateโ€™s ballot, the focus has again shifted to Trumpโ€™s tax returns, a major campaign issue during the run-up to the 2016 presidential elections. Grassroots Dems including Yours Truly, ecstatic about Rhode Islandโ€™s decision are now pushing for other states to follow Rhode Islandโ€™s lead and lock Trump out of the 2020 ballot unless he releases the tax returns he promised toโ€“the #NoTaxReturnsNoBallot campaign

โ€” Emoluments Clause (@Emolclause) June 22, 2018

Left out of the renewed tax return debate however, is the fact that GOP members of Congress have played a major role in aiding the president hide his tax returns from the public, especially these 23 Republicans in the House Ways and Means Committee, or as Yours Truly calls them, the “wall of shame”.

Their efforts to block moves by Congressional Dems to have Trumpโ€™s tax returns released to the public were reported in this February 15, 2017 piece by the DailyKos. As you can see from the article, the DailyKos has done all the legwork in exposing these shameful GOP members of congress. Yours Truly is simply hitting you with a reminder now that midterms 2018 are around the corner. As usual they will be coming begging for your votes claiming they stand for โ€œtransparency in government.โ€ They will be hoping off course that youโ€™ve long forgotten about their lack of transparency re Trumpโ€™s tax returns. Bottomline folks, #NoTaxReturnsNoBallot is a win-win fight for Dems because it puts the GOP in the unenviable position of defending a public official(Trump) who promised to release his tax returns while campaigning but now chooses to hide them, even as questions about his corrupt business practices continue to pile up. Dem State Reps across the country must introduce bills like the one in Rhode Island so as to get Republicans go on the record with a vote to hide Trumpโ€™s tax returnsโ€“a vote for lack of transparency in government. Dems can rest assured that midterms 2018 voters will not be happy with pro-secrecy in government candidatesโ€“the GOPers hiding Trumpโ€™s tax returns.

Folks see if one of these wall of shame bums is your Rep in Congress and if they are, make sure to vote them out this Midterms 2018!!
